Why Aotearoa?

'Whakatōmuri te haere whakamua' walking backwards into the future with our eyes fixed on the past.

This Māori principle resonates deeply with how Koreans approach memory and justice. Both cultures know you can't move forward by pretending difficult histories don't exist.

Korean New Zealanders aren't visitors here, we're locals. We send our kids to schools here, run businesses on your street, vote in elections, and carry histories that shape how we understand violence, power, and resistance. We call this place home. 

Violence against women isn't history. It's present tense. One in three women in Aotearoa experiences physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Sexual violence in war and conflict continues globally. The systems that enslaved 200,000 women during WWII haven't disappeared but evolved.

The Statue of Peace asks: What are we doing now to prevent this from happening again?

This is participatory public art; the empty chair beside her is an invitation. Sit down. Listen. Have courageous conversations about how historical violence connects to violence in our communities today.

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland has always led on these conversations. We acknowledged the Chinese Poll Tax, apologised for the Dawn Raids, and continue to grapple with Treaty obligations. Mature communities hold complexity. Reconciliation requires facing discomfort. Peace isn't the absence of conflict - it's the presence of justice.

This statue isn't a "Korean issue" for Aucklanders to adopt. It's an Auckland opportunity to join a global network of more than 100 cities that stands for violence against women through historical literacy, to model accountability for our kids, to practice the kind of courageous kōrero that builds actual peace.

Because our ancestors and children all deserve better than our silence.

이 마오리 속담은 한국인의 기억과 정의 접근법과 깊이 공명합니다. 우리는 어려운 역사를 못 본 척하면서는 앞으로 갈 수 없다는 걸 공감하는 민족입니다. 

한인 디아스포라는 방문객이 아닙니다. 우리는 뉴질랜드에 뿌리를 내리고 사는 시민입니다. 현지 학교에 아이들을 보내고, 직장에 다니고, 선거에서 투표하고, 폭력·권력·저항을 이해하는 방식을 형성하는 역사를 짊어지고 엄연한 이 땅의 구성원으로 살아가고 있습니다.

여성에 대한 폭력은 역사가 아닙니다. 현재진행형이에요. 아오테아로아 여성 3명 중 1명이 평생 동안 신체적·성적 폭력을 경험합니다. 전시 성폭력은 전 세계에서 지금도 계속돼요. 2차 세계대전 당시 20만 명의 여성을 노예로 만든 그 시스템은 사라진 게 아니라 오히려 진화했습니다.

평화의 소녀상은 묻습니다: 우리는 지금 이게 다시 일어나지 않도록 무엇을 하고 있나요?

소녀상은 참여형 공공예술입니다. 소녀상 옆의 빈 의자는 같이 앉아 들어달라는 초대장이에요. 역사적 폭력이 오늘날 우리 커뮤니티의 폭력과 어떻게 연결되는지, 용기 있는 대화를 나누세요.

오클랜드는 항상 이런 대화를 선도해왔습니다. Chinese Poll Tax를 인정했고, Dawn Raids에 사과했고, 와이탕이 조약 의무와 계속 씨름하고 있습니다. 성숙한 커뮤니티는 복잡함을 외면하지 않고 화해는 불편함을 마주하는 걸 요구합니다. 평화는 갈등의 부재가 아니라 정의의 존재이기 때문입니다.

이 소녀상은 한인들이 뉴질랜드에 "끌어들이는 한국 이슈"가 아닙니다. 오클랜드가 역사적 문해력을 통해 여성에 대한 폭력을 예방하는 글로벌 도시 네트워크에 합류하고, 우리 아이들에게 책임의 모습을 보여주고, 진짜 평화를 만드는 용기 있는 진정한 대화를 실천할 기회를 마련하는 일입니다.

앞서가신 모든 분들과 미래 세대는 우리의 침묵보다 값진 걸 받을 자격이 있으니까요.
