On Tuesday 28 April, the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board declined the proposal to install the Statue of Peace within the Korean Garden at Barrys Point Reserve. This is an unfortunate outcome. We are particularly mindful of the potentially harmful impact of this decision for survivors of gender-based and conflict-related violence, as disregard for survivor-centred justice is an all-of-society problem.
To everyone who has supported our campaign - thank you.
Special thanks to local board members, Gavin Busch and George Wood, who made heartfelt speeches in favour of the Statue and voted against the motion to decline our proposal. We look forward to the day when we can come together to welcome the Statue of Peace to our shores.
What happens next:
This campaign may have ended but our work carrying on the legacy of the survivors of Japanese military sexual slavery continues.
• In the meantime, our Instagram and Get Involved & Events page have talking points, background reading, and educational resources if you want to go deeper or have conversations in your own networks.
Auckland local women-led grassroots group is bringing a Statue of Peace to Auckland in 2026.
We're Korean New Zealanders, public health specialists, environmental workers, academics, small business owners, artists, and parents; ordinary people who call both Korea and Aotearoa home.
We are all volunteers working on this project because we believe remembering complex histories makes us and future stronger.
